No tools, no jargon — just ten minutes and a bit of honesty. Five checks to find out whether AI search knows your firm exists.

You don’t need a consultant or a dashboard to find out whether AI tools know your firm exists. You need ten minutes and a bit of honesty about what you find. This is a self-check any owner or director can run today — no jargon, no tools to install.

Grab a coffee and work through these five checks. Keep score as you go.

Check 1 — Ask the AI to recommend a firm like yours

Open ChatGPT (and, if you can, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overview). Ask the kind of question a prospective client would ask: “Who are the best [your service] firms for [your type of client] in [your city/region]?”

Then read the answer honestly. Are you named? Are your competitors? If the AI lists three firms and you’re not one of them, that’s not a failure — it’s your starting line, and it’s exactly the gap worth closing.

Score it

Named and described accurately = 2 points. Mentioned in passing = 1. Not there at all = 0.

Check 2 — Ask the AI directly about your firm

Now ask: “What can you tell me about [your firm’s name]?” Watch for two failure modes. First, the AI knows nothing — a blank, generic answer. Second, and worse, it confidently states something wrong: an outdated service, the wrong location, a confusion with another business. Either way, that’s the impression a buyer may be getting.

Check 3 — Read your own homepage like a machine

Open your homepage and ask one question: in the first screen, is it obvious what you do, who you do it for, and where? Not implied through a clever tagline — stated plainly. If a stranger (or a model) had to summarize your firm from that page in one sentence, could they get it right?

If your value is buried under vague language like “we deliver solutions,” a machine will struggle exactly where a busy human does.

Check 4 — Hunt for inconsistencies

Search your firm’s name and look at how you appear across Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and any directories. You’re looking for mismatches: a different business name, an old address, services described one way here and another way there. Every inconsistency chips away at the confidence an AI needs to recommend you.

Conflicting information doesn’t just confuse customers — it makes a machine quietly decide you’re a risk it would rather not name.

Check 5 — Look for answers, not just brochures

Scan your site for content that directly answers real client questions — pricing, process, “how do I choose,” “what’s the difference between X and Y.” If every page is a brochure about how great you are, there’s little for an AI to quote. The firms that get cited are the ones that actually answer things.

Tally your score

  • 8–10: You’re in good shape. Tighten the edges and stay consistent.
  • 4–7: The foundation is there but AI isn’t sure about you. Fixable, and worth fixing soon.
  • 0–3: You’re largely invisible to AI search. That’s not a crisis — it’s an opportunity your competitors probably haven’t taken yet.

The bottom line

This ten-minute check won’t fix anything by itself, but it tells you the truth — and most firms have never actually looked. Wherever you landed, the path forward is the same: be clear, be consistent, and answer real questions.

If your score was lower than you’d like and you want a second pair of eyes, a free SEO check will pinpoint what to fix first.
